Judge Zayas hears oral arguments at the Ohio Supreme Court

Recently, First District Judge Marilyn Zayas took the bench at the Ohio Supreme Court for the third time in 40 days.

In an article posted by Court News Ohio, Judge Zayas reflected on her humble beginnings and her career achievements. Judge Zayas has lived in Cincinnati for almost 40 years and has worked in many different roles in public service, including serving as an intellectual property litigator, public defender, and immigration attorney. Judge Zayas told Court News Ohio, “Whether I was defending a client in immigration court or litigating a complex IP case, I was building the skill set I rely on every day as a judge – the ability to look at a case from every angle.”

In 2016, Judge Zayas was the first Latina elected to serve on the Ohio Court of Appeals. In 2024, she was nationally recognized by the National Hispanic Bar Association as Latina Judge of the Year and later featured on Good Morning America for her public service. Judge Zayas credits these honors to the State of Ohio and the entire region saying, “Those awards are about what Ohio has made possible. It’s a reflection of this region’s belief in opportunity and fairness.”
