Local Students Attend Oral Arguments at the First District

On October 3, 2023, students from the University of Cincinnati College of Law attended oral arguments with Professor Emeritus and former judge Marianna Bettman. Marianna Bettman was the first woman ever elected to the Ohio First District Court of Appeals when she was elected in 1992. She served on this court from 1993-1999. The students who accompanied her heard arguments in three cases before a three-judge panel consisting of Presiding Judge Candace Crouse, Judge Robert Winkler, and Judge Ginger Bock. At the conclusion of arguments, the students had the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with the three-judge panel before debriefing the cases on their own with Professor Bettman.

On October 14, 2023, the First District welcomed students from Northern Kentucky University to observe oral arguments. The students were given a tour of the Court’s offices by Judge Jennifer Kinsley before attending oral arguments in the courtroom. They heard arguments in four cases before a three-judge panel consisting of Presiding Judge Marilyn Zayas, Judge Pierre Bergeron, and Judge Jennifer Kinsley. Judge Ginger Bock sat for Judge Bergeron in the first case. The students participated in a question-and-answer session with Judge Zayas, Judge Bergeron, Judge Kinsley, and the judges’ staff attorneys at the conclusion of arguments.
